U.S. Hands Off Iran!

The following is a statement drafted by UNC-Chapel Hill SDS opposing U.S. aggression against Iran. The chapter is calling on students at UNC-Chapel Hill to gather for a protest and march at 12 noon on the day following a U.S. attack against Iran.

U.S. HANDS OFF IRAN!

In 2002, Bush named Iraq , Iran and North Korea as the ‘axis of evil’. Since then, U.S. forces have invaded and occupied Iraq and Afghanistan. The war drums continue to beat against Iran and Syria , and an attack against Iran is now seen as inevitable.

As a strong anti-imperialist state, Iran is a direct obstacle to U.S. control over the region. The U.S. government and corporate media are creating an atmosphere of mass hysteria against Iran’s nuclear energy program. This is seen daily in the media’s portrayal of democratically elected President Ahmedinejad as a “new Hitler” leading a nation of “fanatical Islamists”.

Bush claims he is trying to “contain” Iranian aggression. This is simply false. In reality, the U.S. government has launched an all out political and economic assault against Iran. The Iranian people have withstood provocation after provocation from the United States government. Economic sanctions have already passed; military action is the next step. The U.S. currently has warships patrolling the Persian Gulf , bases in Iraq and Afghanistan, and access to Iran from all its borders.

According to the Geneva conventions, attacking a sovereign nation is the highest act of aggression. The United States does not have the right, legally or morally, to attack another nation and further destabilize the Middle East . The path to peace in the Middle East begins with U.S. withdrawal from the region.

UNC-Chapel Hill Students for a Democratic Society condemn U.S. aggression against Iran. We fully support the Iranian peoples’ right to self-determination. This includes Iran’s right as a sovereign nation to develop nuclear energy to fuel its peoples growing energy demands. We call on all youth and students to resist current U.S. policies of military intimidation against Iran. Any attack must be met with protest and resistance!

No War Against Iran! U.S. Out of the Middle East!
